Georgia consistently ranks among the lowest performing states nationally, but community, political, and business leaders are coming together to change this.
Of the 14 million U.S. children growing up in poverty, over half will not graduate from high school. In Georgia, the situation is even bleaker. Georgia is one of the lowest performing states in national rankings of SAT scores (47th) and child well-being (41st), as well as high school graduation rates (45th).
At the same time, there are many organizations, businesses, political leaders and school leaders passionately working to close the achievement gap and ensure that students in low-income communities all receive a great education.
Over the past decade, there has been an increased sense of urgency to fix public education in Georgia. Some of this is evident by the charter movement; with Georgia public charter schools placing fourth in the nation, according to the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and Georgia’s recent win during the second round of the Race To The Top federal funding competition.
