The Dallas Independent School District (ISD) is the second largest school district in Texas, and 14th largest school district in the nation.
The Dallas ISD serves a diverse population of more than 160,000 students, with 70 different languages spoken in the homes of the students. While they are moving in the right direction towards educational change, the Dallas ISD is still in need of help.
In 2008, Dallas ISD was reported to have the 7th highest dropout rate of any urban district in the country. However as of November 2009, it seems that the dropout patterns are improving. In an effort to gain momentum, the district has begun to reach out to public and private businesses, parents, and individuals, but is still in need of support, organization, and a clear vision. Some public charter schools in Texas, such as the schools run by KIPP, Uplift Education and YES Prep Public Schools, are seeing success in preparing kids for college.
