Long known as one of the worst performing urban school districts in the country, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has become an epicenter of potentially game-changing reform.
Parents are mobilizing, driving progressive education throughout the entire state. In August 2009, 3000 parents demanded that the LAUSD pass the Public School Choice resolution, which allows high-performing charter schools and other groups to bid against the district to operate neighborhood schools.
In December 2009, a movement led by the Parent Revolution convinced the state legislature to pass the Parent Trigger. If 51% of parents at any failing school sign a Parent Trigger petition, the district must take massive action to turn around the school under one of four options. Los Angeles is now one of the first school districts in the nation to offer parents the legal right to require a school to be transformed, when necessary, to benefit every child.
