According to Memphis City Schools, only 6% of students are college-ready. But leaders in Memphis have reached out for help.
In 2009, on the Algebra I final exam, only 39% of ninth graders earned a proficient score. In response to the disappointing results, the Memphis School District, led by Superintendent Kriner Cash, applied for and was awarded a $90 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to completely overhaul teacher recruitment, evaluation, and retention.
Additionally, Tennessee was one of two states to win the first round of Race to the Top funding, which will bring $500 million to the state to implement proven reforms in all of Tennessee schools.
