Despite low test scores and a significant achievement gap Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools are optimistic about the changes ahead.
Nashville ranks 47th in the nation in reading and math performance, with fewer than 28% of fourth graders considered proficient in both subjects. In addition, state tests show that Nashville high school seniors are insufficiently prepared for college and the workforce.
To help better prepare students, Nashville’s public schools are launching a talent recruitment and development pipeline to increase the number of great teachers. Additionally, Tennessee was one of two states to win the first round of Race to the Top funding, which will bring $500 million to the state to implement proven reforms in all of Tennessee schools.
