New York City

With more than 1.1 million students, the New York City public school system is the largest in the country, yet for years boasted some of the lowest graduation rates.

In recent years, test scores and graduation rates have improved, but many students still receive an education that does little to prepare them for adult life. In 2010, motivated by President Obama’s Race to the Top initiative, New York State lifted a cap on charter schools and also introduced a teacher evaluation system that takes student performance into account. However, recent budget cuts threaten future layoffs.

Be a part of the local movement by getting involved with your local Waiting for “Superman” campaign.
