Arizona is frequently cited as having one of the highest high school dropout rates in the nation and is ranked 49th in the nation for per student investment in K-12 education. At the same time, there are many organizations, businesses, political leaders, school leaders, and others who are working better prepare students and close the achievement gap. They are passionate about the role that education can play in giving all young people the opportunities they deserve.
There has also been some momentum in making policy changes to improve Phoenix schools. This past year bills have passed to limit grade promotion for students not reading on grade level by the 3rd grade, seniority has been replaced with effectiveness as the most important tool in determining which teachers are retained. These policy actions are laying the groundwork for significant reform efforts to progress in Arizona.
