Students in 45 of the 58 school districts in the Sacramento area scored higher on recent state-wide tests than the year before.
Despite this increase, the percentage of failing schools has also risen. Fewer than half of Sacramento schools are meeting academic targets set by the federal government in certain areas, including: graduation rates, attendance, participation in testing, as well as the proficiency of minority groups, students with disabilities, and English language learners. But there are efforts underway to address these issues.
An experienced education reformer, Mayor Kevin Johnson has made education a top priority for his administration. In Sacramento schools, principals are being urged to support parent and community involvement, require learning plans for teachers and students and always put kids first. They are also urging teachers to use innovative teaching methods, and lead teacher workshops on educating urban kids.
