With more than 45,000 students, the Seattle Public Schools is the largest district in the state. Yet Seattle has a growing achievement gap and a low graduation rate.
Earlier this year, Washington passed education reform legislation to improve its schools, which included a new evaluation system for teachers and principals and the authority for the state to intervene in chronically low-performing schools. Despite these recent reforms, Washington is not considered a leading state in improving public education and was not chosen as a finalist for the federal Race to the Top program.
In 2007, 22 Washington schools were categorized as dropout factories. As of 2010, 47 Washington schools were categorized as low-performing, under new federal guidelines. Washington voters have turned down charter schools three times, most recently in 2004.
