Since 2005, 9,000 of the estimated 25,000 students have dropped out of St. Louis Public Schools (SLPS), although the superintendent is making an effort to help these students stay in school.
High turnover in leadership in SLPS has resulted in widespread instability for students and staff. In 2007, the district lost its state accreditation and was taken over by the state government due to chronic underperformance. Student achievement remains low: SLPS elementary students’ scores in math on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) are, on average, 38%lower than those of their peers in Clayton. Results in the Normandy School District, the Hazelwood School District’s turn-around schools, and high-need charter schools are similarly grim.
